In November 2019, the Lea County Early Childhood Coalition launched a new early literacy effort.  Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails FREE, high-quality books to children from birth to their fifth birthday, no matter their family’s income. The only requirement is that you live in Lea County.

“The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school.”
-National Commission on Reading

After the launch of the new program, the partner organizations quickly went to work promoting and signing up families.  In only two months they registered over 880 Lea County children!  Those children will receive one book every month until their fifth birthday with no cost or obligation to the family.

The JF Maddox Foundation’s funding pays for these books for the first few years while the Lea County Early Childhood Coalition raises community support for the program for a longer term.  It is a great way to encourage a culture of reading in our community.
