Homelessness is a big problem around the United States and it is affecting Lea County too. The JF Maddox Foundation has seen the problem and has joined a working group to help solve this problem.

Homeless doesn’t just refer to sleeping on the streets every night. Homeless people can be sleeping in their cars or crashing on their friends’ couches too. This is why we refer to the issue as housing insecure.

What comes to your mind when you think of a homeless person? Do you think of an elderly man sitting on the street corner with a cardboard sign? Well, the data is starting to show the housing insecure population in Lea County isn’t made up of just men. Many of the population are women and children.

Before you can start solving a problem you have to know what the problem really is. The workgroup is researching for twelve months and collecting data to see all the different parts of the problem. The results will surprise you!

So far, the data is showing a large part of the housing insecure have run into bad luck. Sometimes it is losing their job and not being able to find a new one before rent is due. Or it could be a medical emergency that came up and there wasn’t enough money saved up to pay for it. Everyone is just one disaster away from being homeless.
