If there is one thing we have learned, it is that in times of crisis, Lea County knows how to come together and care for our friends and neighbors.
During the recent government shutdown, community members in need began reaching out for assistance. With the JF Maddox Foundation investing in programs and initiatives to support emergency relief efforts, local partners and nonprofit organizations rolled up their sleeves to work together to find ways to assist those in need.
Food insecurity was a critical concern for many residents, especially with food assistance programs on the line. When the number of people walking through the doors of Isaiah’s Soup Kitchen increased, the foundation provided a grant to help them ramp up operations so that everyone in need was able to receive a hot meal. The Salvation Army of Hobbs also used grant funding to acquire bulk portions of beans and rice that they then shared with other organizations in need of food items to help feed their clients. Additionally, for those in need of emergency utility assistance, the Guidance Center of Lea County stepped in to provide relief during months when finances were tight.
We also witnessed powerful collaborations that highlighted the greater impact we make when we work together. Cissy’s Food Ministry became a Roadrunner Food Bank agency partner, giving them access to additional resources to better serve seniors and low-income residents and families.
When we work together, we have the power to accomplish much more collectively than we ever could alone. By continuing to collaborate and join forces, we can overcome our community’s greatest challenges and create a stronger, more compassionate Lea County.
